Welcome to the home page for the 2006 Signature Event conference for the Australia Research Council's Asia Pacific Futures Research Network (APFRN), organised by the Media-Asia Research Group (MARG).
There is little doubt that in the 21st century our understanding of ourselves and our surroundings are overtly and covertly shaped by the media. But what determines the form and content of media remains an open and important question. Is media content shaped by ownership? By the state and its policies? Or by the more abiding features of cultures and societies? In an era of global broadcast, on the one hand, and the capacity for highly targeted narrowcasting on the other, how do we begin to draw the parameters within which we think about the media?
The conference will bring together scholars and practitioners to answer these questions which rest in the cusp of media, politics and culture.
